We all want to have amazing skin. Those of us who are not fortunate enough to wake up flawless, have to put some work into it. I neglected my skin for many years. Despite going to the dermatologist and using medication to treat my acne, I wasn’t really taking care of my skin. Since I started blogging, I’ve changed the way I treat my precious complexion. I now go the extra mile to use products that will keep my skin looking its best for years to come. Part of my new ritual includes using a face mask at least once a week. Types of Face Masks
With my clogged pores and breakouts, clay is my mask of choice. If you have oily or breakout-prone skin, you may want to incorporate a clay mask into your regimen. Clay masks absorb excess oils, reducing surface shine and helping to eliminate clogged pores. If you have dry skin, I would not recommend them! Like most things, moderation with this mask is key, as overuse can dry out your skin, which in turn, can actually cause you to break out.
You may think that mud and clay are one in the same, but they are actually very different. Unlike clay, mud has healing properties and a water base, which keeps it from drying your skin. Mud masks include minerals and other ingredients that focus on anti-aging as well as the removal of impurities. They can also help tighten skin and minimize pores. Win-win!
They make look crazy, but sheet masks actually act as vessels through which you can apply a concentrated dose of your favorite serum. The liquid that soaks into the sheet delivers hydration, anti-aging, brightening, or calming properties. Sheet masks appeal to essentially every skin type—you just have to find the right mask for the problem you want to treat. They may not be the most attractive travel accessory, but I love using them on long flights to help protect my skin.
Get ready for an extra boost of hydration, because cream masks are basically night cream on steroids. If you have dry skin, I recommend using a cream mask at night as a wonderful way to give dehydrated skin a hydration boost. Even if your skin isn’t visibly dry, remember that we could all benefit from adding a little bit more moisture to our skin from time to time.
Activated charcoal has been trending for a while now, but the jury is still out on its benefits in relation to skin care. When ingested, charcoal is known to absorb toxins in your stomach, and many believe that it can help provide these same qualities when applied to the skin. Studies have not proven this theory yet, but there is no harm in trying it. I recommend a charcoal mask that washes off as opposed to those that peel, as the latter could potentially damage your skin.
If you are new to using face masks, I recommend selecting one type to start and applying it on the same day each week for a month to gauge its efficacy. The key to a great skin care regimen is to not try to fix every issue at once, but rather, to slowly introduce new products until you find the right ones for you!
