Believe it or not, we all have a personal brand. Although many people have not intentionally developed their personal brand or know what their brand says about them, it still exists. How you present yourself (especially online) is vital for your professional advancement and career reputation.Every status posted on Facebook, every picture uploaded on Instagram, and every video shared on Shapchat all contributes to your personal brand.
These social sites serve as an indication of how you value yourself and what you have to offer. Jeff Bezos, founder of Amazon says it best; “Your brand is what people say about you when you’re not in the room.” So, what does your personal brand say about you? Be Real – Your personal brand should showcase your authentic self. Highlight your strengths, interests and what makes you unique, as that is the core of your personal brand.
Be Consistent – Ensure that your brand message is consistent across all platforms. It helps others find you easily and it aids in providing a memorable experience. For example: using the same name, photo and design across all social channels.
Be Connected – Connect your brand to the right audience. Interact with your followers and other strong brands. Join a chat or group and constantly stay engaged. This will help attract others to you and your brand.
Be Known – Be clear on whom you are and what you want to be known for. Examine what differentiates your skills from everyone else and become known for it. Build a deep knowledge on your expertise to one day become a thought leader and expert.
